What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, involves the use of specially designed contact lenses that gently re-shape the surface of your eye while you sleep, so you can enjoy clear, crisp 20/20 vision after you remove the lenses all day long.
The benefits of Ortho-K are that it does not involve surgery and it is completely reversible. Additionally, for those interested in preventing the nearsightedness from worsening, the use of Ortho-K lenses has been known to slow progression of myopia in patients.
How Does It Work?
Myopia (nearsightedness) is caused when light doesn’t focus properly on the retina. Typically, this is corrected with glasses or common contact lenses by re-focusing the light rays. The Ortho-K procedure re-shapes the cornea, thus allowing light to enter properly and focus correctly on the retina. This re-shaping is temporary – enough to get you through an entire day, but you must wear the lenses each night while you sleep.
